⭐ The Roles We Play — Behind the Cover
Project Overview
“The Roles We Play” blends romance and science fiction, following a connection born inside an online role‑playing world. The goal of the cover was to visualize this emotional and digital dynamic. My task was to transform an existing premade concept into a fully customized design that reflects the atmosphere, themes, and genre identity of the novel.
Starting Point: The Premade
The project began with a premade cover titled “Shelter in Dreams.
” While the original artwork had a soft, introspective tone, it needed a stronger emotional focus, clearer storytelling, and a more dramatic mood to fit the sci‑fi romance genre.
Concept Development
The development phase focused on shifting the atmosphere and emotional tone of the cover. I worked with color, lighting, and texture to move from a dream‑like feel to a more dramatic and story‑driven visual direction that aligns with the novel’s themes of identity, connection, and the blurred line between virtual and real worlds.
Typography & Mood
The typography from the premade was kept, but refined to better integrate with the updated composition and mood. Through adjustments in placement, contrast, and visual balance, the type gained a stronger presence
and supported the emotional tone of the final design.
Final Design
The final cover presents a richer, more dramatic atmosphere with enhanced textures, expressive lighting, and a clear emotional focus. The design was expanded into a complete package, including the ebook cover, paperback layout, and interior spread.
Process Video
This project also includes a before/after process video that highlights the visual evolution — from the original premade to a design that better reflects the story’s emotional depth and the characters’ journey from virtual connection to real‑world intimacy.
